STUTTGART: Maria Sharapova smashed out in the opening round of the Stuttgart Grand Prix on Tuesday as French 6th seed Caroline Garcia organized a fightback to win 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4.
“This was not the outcome that I needed, but rather I can remove a considerable measure from this match,” Sharapova said. “I’ve not gone after fourteen days, but rather I played entirely strong and did the majority of the correct things.
“I served well in the primary set however had a couple of pairs at the wrong time. Physically, I felt very solid.”
The five-time Grand Slam champion, who turned 31 a week ago, appeared to be in charge as she made only two unforced mistakes in winning the opening set.
